Onward Gets Into the Giving Spirit

The temperatures are dropping here in Wilton, CT and the chilly weather means it’s time to think about holiday plans, family dinners, and gift ideas. It’s also a time to remember that the holiday comforts and traditions we enjoy each year don’t have to be rare exceptions for those who are less fortunate.

This Thanksgiving season, Onward Healthcare and Onward Search opened their closets and donated coats to support the Bridgeport Rescue Mission, located in nearby Bridgeport, CT. The Bridgeport Rescue Mission assists hungry, homeless, and addicted people throughout Fairfield County Connecticut, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Led by the proud members of the “Coat Committee” (below), Onward employees from the Wilton, CT office donated everything they could for the first two weeks of November.

From winter coats and outer wear to food items and canned goods, the Onward family demonstrated more generosity and kindness than our office hallway could handle. (This picture doesn’t do it justice.)

At the end of the two weeks, there were over 400 winter items and an abundance of food ready to deliver in time for Thanksgiving. Betsey Corey, Community Relations Manager at the Bridgeport Rescue Mission, informed us that our collection marked a record for the most coats donated by a company in Fairfield County. Needless to say, we are deeply moved by and sincerely proud of such recognition.

Ultimately, the real credit goes to the Bridgeport Rescue Mission for their tireless dedication to helping those who are in need. Our seasonal donation pales in comparison to their inspirational 365 days a year commitment. If you’d like to support the Bridgeport Rescue Mission by donating winter clothing, food items or even your time and energy, you can reach them at http://www.bridgeportrescuemission.org

From the entire Onward Family to yours, have a wonderful, happy and safe Thanksgiving Holiday!

Acing the Phone Interview for a Travel Nursing Job

Tips for success on a travel nursing phone interview.

Beyond all the perks that come with each travel nursing assignment, there is one additional plus that comes before you even sign all the papers.  99% of the time the interview for a travel nursing job takes place over the phone, which is usually much less stressful than interviewing in person.

While you can choose to wear sweat pants and let your hair go uncombed, the phone interview is still an interview and requires you to be on top of your professional game. So whether you’re just starting out in your travel nursing career, or you want to just freshen up your interviewing skills, this list of tips will help you ace your next phone interview.

Tip #1: Do all your homework and have your notes in hand.

Prior to the interview, do some research about your potential employer and keep any notes (plus your resume) within reach for easy reference during the call. Your interviewer will appreciate that you took the time to research their facility and if you get stumped on a question, you’ll have everything you need right in front of you.

Travel Nurse Saves Fellow Traveler

Onward Healthcare Travel RN, Billy Ray Wilson

Travel nurses are accustomed to flying more than the average person, and of course, they’re very accustomed to working directly with those whose health often requires immediate professional attention. But how often do travel nurses have to utilize their medical expertise during a flight?

For one travel nurse who has been working with Onward Healthcare since 2005, the answer is; just the other day. When Billy Ray Wilson prepared to leave his home town of Atlanta on October 28th for his next assignment in Houston, he found nothing out of the ordinary about his traveling plans. Even the flight delays caused by inclement weather weren’t that big of a deal. When offered a seat on an earlier flight, Billy Ray graciously opted out in favor of a business class seat on his original flight, and it’s a good thing he did.

An hour into the flight, Billy Ray noticed the flight attendants acting frantic about something near the lavatory. When one of the flight attendants reached a shaky hand to the intercom and requested the attention of a healthcare professional, he calmly approached the front of the cabin and immediately went into nurse mode.

He saw a young man lying on the floor, cold, clammy, not breathing and unresponsive. With the stethoscope and blood pressure cuff he keeps in a travel case at all times, Billy Ray checked the man’s vital signs and asked all the right questions about his medical history without missing a beat. Shortly after Billy Ray began CPR, the young man regained consciousness and was able to sit up much to the relief of his wife and child. Billy Ray stayed with the ailing young man and kept track of his heart rate until the plane made a priority landing where paramedics were waiting.

Billy Ray’s flight turned out to be one he will never forget, and a demonstration of why travel nurses are so important. Whether they’re on the ground or en route to their next travel nursing assignment, their talents are always appreciated by the people who need them the most.
